The Full Story (The Making of “The Company) and….
Okay, I believe it’s time I did this. This is the full story of the making of “The Company” and my thoughts on the whole thing:
As you some of you already know, a year ago I made a teaser for a web-series called “The Company.” This web-series was to be made by myself and my friends and to be released in the spring of 2009. However, production did not start till early summer. I shot a second teaser in late spring (which is still yet to be uploaded). We shot several short videos for the ARG. The ARG, or alternate reality game, would tell the backstory of what’s going in “The Company.” We had a website set up, russellvilledetectiveagency.webs.com, which would tell of the fictional detective agency in the web-series. The ARG had several stages.
We actually only filmed three scenes. Two of them are from the original draft of the script, and the third one is a true scene, like we put effort into it and it would be part of the real web-series. I still have all three of the scenes, but I’m wondering whether to release them or not.
I had planed to do 5 or 6 episodes. Once an episode was released, the sites would update to news that was just released in the episode. It would be very interactive with emails that you could send a message to, and they would reply back.
In all honesty, I was looking forward to this. I thought, this will be kinda cool. I had big character background stories, plot twists, and even secure locations to film at. However, reality caught up with me. This project was to big to handle alone. I had help from my good friend Ben Taylor, and we tried to do our best, but the decision to cancel this was inevitable. It was also bad on quality when I saw the product. It just didn’t feel right to do it. So, after it was all over, the jokes of how bad it was started. I felt embaressed by it. It was a total failure to me at the time.
Now, almost a year after I came up with the idea of “The Company,” I feel like it was not a failure, but something I can look back on with enjoyment. I loved trying to put it together, and I truly do not think it is total crap. Yes, I do know it did not look good. I was a sophomore in High School when I made the teaser. It’s a was pretty good from someone at my age.
I still would like to revisit this whole plot. I really think it’s a good one. It’s the best one I’ve come up with, I think I was just too young to tell it. Maybe when I’m older, I’ll attempt to do it again. If that fails too, who knows what will happen. I might try a third time to do it, or just drop it.
All in all, I love working on “The Company.” Make fun of me if you wish, I don’t care. I’m proud I tried to do it.
-Ben Murphy
